No canonical chain

What the check finds

The canonical points to a page that itself points somewhere else. Chains are not followed reliably, so the wrong URL can end up indexed.

Why it matters for AI answers

Search engines may not follow a canonical that points to another canonical. The page that gets indexed, and cited in AI answers built on search, may be the wrong one.

How to fix it

  1. Point each canonical directly at the final preferred URL in one step.
  2. Give the preferred URL a self-referencing canonical.
  3. Re-check after site moves, which often leave old canonicals pointing at retired URLs.
