Training versus live retrieval
Training adjusts model parameters using examples. Live retrieval supplies information for a particular answer without being the same process as updating the model’s learned parameters.
How the concept fits together
Training path
Training examples → learned parameters
Live retrieval path
Question → live retrieved material
What it means for GEO
Fresh documentation may support a search-grounded answer even though training data is older. Search access and training permissions should not be treated as identical.
What not to infer
Being cited does not demonstrate that a page was used for training; supplying a file does not establish public-web discovery.
How it works
Training changes a model’s learned parameters across examples; retrieval supplies information for a particular response. An assistant can combine learned patterns with recently fetched evidence, so a model’s training horizon alone does not determine the freshness of a search-enabled answer. Website controls also distinguish uses: OpenAI documents independent OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot settings for search and training. A user-requested page fetch is another distinct access path. None of these paths proves how a particular answer was generated unless the product exposes the relevant evidence.
GEO example
Illustrative scenario, not observed assistant behavior or measured results.
Illustrative scenario: a product changes its export limits and publishes dated documentation. A search-enabled assistant might cite the new page while a response without search repeats an older limit. Confirm the actual sources and mode before concluding that the documentation failed. If the site permits search crawling but disallows training crawling, that is a documented separation of permissions, not a guarantee that the new page will appear in answers or that old learned information has been removed.
What you can do
- Publish current facts with meaningful dates and update contradictory pages, not just the homepage.
- Review search and training crawler policies separately against the relevant provider’s documentation.
- Keep private-file tests separate from public-web discovery tests; supplying a document changes the available evidence.
What to measure, and what it cannot prove
Compare responses under clearly recorded search-enabled and non-search conditions when the product allows that distinction. Save citations and the source versions you checked. Freshness in one answer does not establish inclusion in training, while an obsolete answer does not by itself identify a training-data cause.
