Practical GEO guides
A practical workflow for refreshing GEO content
Find outdated or conflicting facts, make focused corrections and review the results without assuming a new date improves citations.

Educational guidance, not a guarantee of AI visibility. Worked examples are explicitly illustrative or fictional, not measured assistant results.
Refresh because facts changed, not to reset a date
Prioritize content whose mistakes can change a customer’s decision: plan eligibility, setup requirements, integration availability, permissions and limitations. Also inspect pages that repeatedly produce support confusion or demonstrably incorrect answer claims. Keep the full observation as evidence instead of relying on a remembered assistant response.
Google’s helpful-content guidance emphasizes accuracy, substantive value and trustworthy sourcing. A refreshed date without a meaningful review is not evidence that a page became more useful. Treat freshness as a responsibility to maintain facts, not a universal AI-search ranking lever.

Create a fact inventory across the affected pages
For each material claim, record where it appears, the authoritative source, its current wording and the responsible reviewer. Check the help center, pricing page, integration guide and marketing summary together. Contradictory descriptions create avoidable uncertainty even if each page is individually easy to read.
Resolve the underlying fact before editing. If a feature varies by plan or region, preserve that qualification. If documentation and observed behavior disagree, record the conflict and get verification rather than choosing the more appealing statement. Do not “fix” an assistant error by changing correct documentation to match it.
Make the smallest complete correction
Update the claim, nearby prerequisites, examples and any linked instructions that depend on it. Keep important exceptions with the feature description. Check descriptive internal links and remove references to an obsolete procedure where appropriate. Preserve useful depth rather than shortening every section to an arbitrary length.
Keep visible text and structured data consistent. Google explicitly lists that alignment among its AI-feature best practices. Adding markup to an unchanged inaccurate page does not correct the evidence, and special AI schema is not required for Google’s AI features.

Worked example: reconcile a changed permission rule
Illustrative scenario, not a GeckoCheck feature specification: ExampleTool now restricts a report-sharing action to administrators. The product help page is correct, but an onboarding article still says every member can share.
The team verifies the rule, corrects the onboarding article, updates its steps and links to the access guide. It records when the rule changed and when each page was reviewed. A later answer that repeats the old permission is logged with its citations.
The team distinguishes an outdated source, an incorrectly interpreted current source and an answer with no visible supporting source. Those observations call for different follow-up work.
Check the corrected public page
- Review the published wording and all material exceptions.
- Follow the procedure or validate the changed fact against current evidence.
- Open the page without a logged-in session when it is intended to be public.
- Check that relevant internal links reach the corrected page.
- Recheck crawling, indexing and snippet eligibility for the target surface.
- Record the actual review date and substantive changes.
Use the access and eligibility checklist for diagnostics. A corrected page can be available without immediately being selected for an answer; there is no universal citation-update deadline.

Observe comparable answers and schedule the next review
Repeat the original question set under documented conditions and retain both favorable and unfavorable responses. Check whether changed facts are now represented accurately, whether old pages remain linked and whether relevant visits lead to the intended task. Do not use a citation count alone as a correctness score.
The GEO measurement study guide explains how to preserve cohorts and denominators. Describe a before-and-after improvement as observational unless the design supports a causal claim. Assign future reviews to material product changes and recurring user confusion, with a sensible periodic check for pages that lack clear change notifications.
