Practical GEO guides

How to write content that can support an AI citation

Rewrite vague claims as specific answers with clear limits and supporting sources. Includes a worked example and publishing checklist.

Educational guidance, not a guarantee of AI visibility. Worked examples are explicitly illustrative or fictional, not measured assistant results.

Start with evidence, not a ranking promise

A useful GEO page helps a reader or assistant answer a real question accurately. It identifies the subject, states a specific fact and makes the evidence inspectable. “Citation-ready” describes this editorial standard, not a certification or promise of inclusion.

Google says its existing SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, including helpful content, important information in textual form and structured data matching visible content. It does not require special AI markup. OpenAI warns that search citations can be incomplete or incorrect. Your task is to provide reliable evidence and then evaluate actual answers.

Choose one decision the page should help resolve

Begin with a question your audience genuinely asks: what a feature does, who can use it, how a limit works or how two approaches differ. List the facts needed to answer it before writing the introduction. A buyer asking about exports needs formats, availability, limits and prerequisites, not an extended history of your brand.

Separate fact from positioning. “Supports CSV export on these plans” can be checked. “The most advanced reporting platform” cannot be established without a defined comparison, evidence and scope. If a statement depends on region, plan or configuration, say so beside the statement.

Make each important passage stand on its own

Name the product or feature explicitly rather than relying on “it” from a previous section. Keep units, dates and exceptions with the claim they qualify. Use headings that describe the question being answered. Retain necessary detail instead of chasing a universal word count.

Link to original documentation or evidence and explain what it establishes. If you publish a comparison, disclose which versions and conditions were reviewed. An untested alternative is not automatically worse. These are editorial practices for clearer evidence, not disclosed ranking factors for every assistant.

Worked example: a more useful export description

Illustrative copy, not a GeckoCheck feature specification:

Weak: Our reporting makes every client workflow effortless.

Better: ExampleTool’s Team plan exports completed reports as CSV. Exports contain the pages included in that report; they do not include pages that were not scanned. Administrators can export from the report menu. Availability was checked against the current plan documentation.

The stronger passage states the subject, eligible plan, output, scope and access condition together. Before publishing, replace every illustrative detail with verified facts. Do not invent a date or label something “tested” if no test occurred.

Publishing and review checklist

  • Verify each capability and limit against current evidence.
  • Put important qualifications beside the relevant claim.
  • Resolve contradictory facts across pricing, help and marketing pages.
  • Keep the content accessible as text and internally linked.
  • Check that structured data describes what readers can see.
  • Record the page revision and compare answers using a stable prompt set.

Review whether answers preserve the meaning, not just whether they link to the page. A citation attached to an overstated claim is a quality problem even when it increases a visibility count.

What the research does and does not establish

The 2024 GEO paper evaluates visibility interventions in its own benchmark and studied systems. It motivates careful experimentation, but does not guarantee that adding quotations or statistics will improve a particular current assistant. Do not manufacture evidence to imitate a research intervention.

A before-and-after citation change can also reflect product updates, different sources or answer variation. Report the prompt set, conditions and raw counts, and describe the change as observational unless the study design supports a causal conclusion.

Period: Reviewed October 12, 2026. Provider documentation is maintained over time; research is historical and identified by publication in each source.

Sample: Educational synthesis of the linked sources. No original observation cohort or assistant benchmark was collected for this article.

Limitation: Checklists and worked examples are GeckoCheck interpretations. Research findings apply to their studied tasks and systems; provider documentation does not guarantee citation or ranking outcomes.
