ChatGPT ads versus Google Ads

Compare the advertising surface, context, delivery, and measurement of ChatGPT ads and Google AI Overview ads without treating them as the same inventory.

Different platforms, not two names for the same product

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements in OpenAI’s conversational product. Google Ads is Google’s advertising platform, covering several campaign types and surfaces; ads within AI Overviews are one eligible Search placement. A Google Ads campaign is not, by definition, a ChatGPT campaign.

Surface and context

  • ChatGPT: an ad can be matched to conversation context and intent, with other documented eligibility and personalization signals. OpenAI states that ads remain separate from the answer.
  • Google AI Overviews: ads can appear above, below, or within a Search overview. Google describes using both the query and overview content for eligible ads within it.
  • Neither observation reveals the full delivery system. Do not translate a ChatGPT prompt directly into a proven Google keyword strategy or the reverse.

Buying and reporting

Campaign eligibility, access, delivery, and reporting belong to the relevant advertising provider and can change. Consult current provider documentation for account setup and requirements. This guide does not promise campaign creation or budget control inside GeckoCheck.

Google’s documented AI Overview reporting limitations mean a general Google Ads campaign total should not be labeled as AI Overview-only results. Likewise, a GeckoCheck observation count is not a substitute for a provider’s campaign performance data.

How to compare in GeckoCheck

Match customer intent, country, language, and observation period, while keeping each platform’s coverage and observation unit explicit. Compare the messages and decisions being addressed rather than declaring a winner from unmatched raw counts.

Use the result to decide what to investigate or improve next, not to guarantee placement or forecast return on ad spend.
