Measure AI advertising without confusing visibility and revenue
Keep observed paid placements, organic mentions, visits, and conversions separate, and make fair comparisons with explicit sample limits.
Use a measurement ladder
First measure what was observed: sponsored placements and the conditions under which they appeared. Separately record organic brand mentions and citations. Then use your own analytics and advertising reports, where available, to investigate visits and conversions.
These are different datasets. GeckoCheck advertising observations do not, by themselves, establish impressions across all users, click-through rate, revenue attribution, or return on ad spend. Do not imply an analytics integration or conversion report exists unless it is available in your workspace.
Declare the denominator
For a study-specific ad-observation rate, divide successful comparable observations containing a sponsored placement by all successful comparable observations in that cohort. Report failed or unavailable observations separately. This is an educational measurement convention, not a specification of a GeckoCheck dashboard metric.
Keep unique advertisers, distinct creative variants, and repeated ad occurrences separate. Counts across ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are not directly comparable if sampling, availability, or observation units differ.
Illustrative calculation
If 12 of 40 successful comparable observations contain an ad, the study’s ad-observation rate is 30%. If there were also 5 failed attempts, report those 5 separately rather than classifying them as no-ad outcomes.
Source: GeckoCheck educational worked example. Period: fictional study period. Sample: 40 successful observations and 5 failed attempts. Limitation: synthetic arithmetic, not customer data, a benchmark, or an estimate of platform-wide reach.
Separate change from causation
Use a stable prompt cohort and matching platforms, markets, account conditions when known, and time windows. Record changes in the product, offers, observation method, and competitor activity. A rise in observed ads alongside a fall in organic mentions does not prove that ads caused that fall.
To evaluate revenue impact, use a suitable experiment or clearly disclosed attribution method with conversion data you are entitled to access. Provider reporting limitations matter: Google’s cited documentation says Google Ads does not currently offer a separate AI Overview placement-reporting segment. Do not invent an AI Overview-only conversion total.
