Versions
AI Overviews with a custom Gemini model
Released
Google introduced AI Overviews to U.S. Search users in May 2024, combining a Gemini model customized for Search with its search systems. AI Overviews is a Search feature, not a separately selectable numbered chatbot model.
Gemini 3 upgrade
Released
Google announced Gemini 3 as the default model for AI Overviews globally in January 2026. This is a documented rollout milestone, not a guarantee about the exact serving model for every query.
Capabilities
Search-result summaries
Provides an AI-generated snapshot on the search results page when Google determines it is helpful. Not every query produces an AI Overview.
Supporting links
Presents links for continuing research. A linked source and a brand mentioned in the generated summary are different kinds of visibility.
Complex question synthesis
Combines Google Search systems with Gemini reasoning to summarize information for questions with several constraints or steps.
Follow-up conversations
Users can ask a follow-up from an AI Overview and continue in AI Mode with context carried forward. AI Overviews and AI Mode remain distinct Search experiences.
Google AI Overview in GeckoCheck
GeckoCheck reads how Google AI Overview answers the queries a brand cares about: whether it names the brand, how it describes it, who it names instead, and which pages it cites.
Each model is read and graded on its own, because each answers differently. A brand's plan sets which models it tracks.
